Armoured vehicles come in all shapes and sizes, and when you think of one, usually a large Cadillac-esque vehicle pops in your mind. Or maybe a tank. Very few would imagine a Toyota Corolla Cross, but hey, now we have one.
Brazilian customers can now opt for bulletproof versions of its popular models, namely the Corolla, Corolla Cross, Hilux, and Fortuner, built by several armouring specialists within the country.
The armouring expertsâAvallon, Carbon, Evolution Blindagens, and Parvi Blindadosâare certified by Toyota. Customers can choose to add bulletproof armour as an optional upgrade, available directly through Toyota showrooms.

The armouring service is offered for both new vehicles and models manufactured from 2020 onwards, subject to a dealer assessment to confirm the vehicle's suitability for the process.
The vehicles will be equipped with reinforced body panels using specialised materials, such as opaque ballistic composites, which are reportedly 80% lighter than steel. They will also feature thick EVO-X glass that meets national safety standards.
Ultimately, they are Level III-A armor, which presents the highest level of civil protection allowed by the Brazilian Army for shots from 9mm pistols/submachine guns and .44 Magnum revolvers. Blunt weapons like bats and metal pipes will also do occupants no harm.
Not only that, rolling around in a car that's available by the boatloads on the road is also a good tactical movement - if you don't stick out, it's hard to target you.
Toyota assures that the armouring wonât compromise the vehicleâs design or performance, though the added weight may reduce fuel efficiency. In fact, Toyota states that the useful life of the brake pads and suspension components might be reduced, given the extra weight the armor adds.
The cost of armouring is separate from the vehicle price, though no quotes are available only. Both Toyota and its certified armouring partners offer a five-year warranty on installation services, along with a 5 to 10-year warranty on the armour materials.
I write about cars, I take pictures of cars, I collect diecast cars, and I go home only to play with more cars online. If I'm not doing all these then I'm shovelling money into my 7th-gen Celica project, @twojetjet.
