The Toyota Alphard is Malaysia’s most famous (and infamous) breadbox on wheels, serving as the official car for high-ranking businessmen, politicians plotting their next toilet breaks power moves, or simply as a symbol of success.
However, the luxurious breadbox on wheels is ageing with the current third-generation having been introduced in 2015. That being said, Toyota is currently developing the fourth-gen Alphard, codenamed AH40, and it is rumoured to be launched in the second-half of 2022.
We have covered a few rumours and renderings of what could be on the next-gen Alphard but this time around, there are some more info on the powertrains.
Recall that the 3.5-litre V6 (300 PS/361 Nm) engine in the outgoing Alphard could be dropped for the next-generation citing stricter emission regulations. According to Japanese publication Mag-X, the supposed replacement would be a turbocharged unit.
Specifically, the turbocharged 2.4-litre T24A inline-4 that also powers the all-new Lexus NX 350 (279 PS/ 430 Nm).
Meanwhile, the base 2.5-litre engine (180 PS/235 Nm) will be upgraded to a more modern Dynamic Force engine of the same size (207 PS/243 Nm) in both the petrol and hybrid variants of the next-gen Alphard. Using the more modern engine could give the Alphard better fuel economy.
Elsewhere, the publication also showed its rendering of what they think the fourth-gen Alphard could look like and it's similar to the outgoing generation. The large grille is a sort of Alphard trademark and Mag-X’s renderers imagined that it would be carried over onto the next generation.
Despite looking largely unchanged, the publication also speculated that the next-gen Alphard will see improved visibility thanks to the revised A-pillars.
Though interior renderings are not revealed, according to another Japanese media, the next-gen Alphard could come with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment screen as seen in the Land Cruiser 300.
Besides, the next-gen Alphard would also be built on the TNGA platform that is adopted from the next-gen Voxy/Noah. The same media also speculates that the platform could improve on the MPV’s comfort and body rigidity.
The Toyota Alphard is one of Japan’s best-selling cars with its placing within the top 5 in the first half of 2021. It’s also a huge favourite overseas, be it through official channels or recon dealers. Could the next-gen Alphard still be a favourite among Malaysian bigwigs even if it loses out on the V6 engine for a more efficient turbo?
