In Brief: Mazda CX-30, the driver’s SUV of choice

In Brief: Mazda CX-30, the driver’s SUV of choice 01

The Mazda CX-30 is a curious child. Larger than a CX-3, but smaller than a CX-5, it occupies this narrow sliver of market segment that is seemingly non-existent. When it debuted in the Malaysian market, many were scratching their heads with the nomenclature. In truth, it is based on the all-new Mazda 3 platform, and as such counts the Toyota C-HR and Subaru XV as natural rivals.

Whilst both the C-HR and XV are good cars in their own right, the CX-30 just seems to be a more cohesive package than either car. That’s the word, cohesive. From the way the car drives, to the driving position, down to the execution of the infotainment. You just get this strong message that all the small details were carefully thought out.

The CX-30 range starts from RM 145,759 for the 2.0G Core variant, and tops out at RM 170,459 for the 2.0G High 4WD. Our pick of the range, however, would be the 2.0G High without AWD. The 1.8 diesel engine just doesn’t cut it for us, with an underwhelming 114 PS and 270 Nm. The 2.0 petrol engine (164 PS, 213 Nm) feels punchier right off the bat, despite the torque deficit. Plus, it has all the bells and whistles of a range-topper, and lighter on its feet without the AWD hardware.

Starting from the exterior, there’s 8 colours to choose from, but the one we’d plump for is definitely the Soul Red Crystal. This colour really brings the Kodo design language to life on the CX-30, flowing and reflecting off different light intensities. If you can’t tell, yes we’re big Kodo fans. The way the head and tail lamps blend together makes the CX-30 look oh-so-right. The indicator lamps even pulses in a manner that mimics a heartbeat, and it is consistent front through back, and on the inside as well. That’s attention to detail.

The indicators pulses when activated

On the move, the CX-30 operates with typical Mazda slickness. Whilst its rivals come equipped with CVT transmissions, Mazda has once again stubbornly refused to bow to market trends, instead persisting with their 6-speed automatic. This, combined with GVC+, makes for a very satisfying driving experience. If you’ve driven the all-new Mazda 3, driving the CX-30 would feel familiar, albeit with a higher centre of gravity.

On the inside, it feels…. cohesive. Everywhere you look and touch feels meticulously finished. Material quality are of a high standard. The infotainment screen in the middle sits at a height where it doesn’t obstruct your view while driving, yet easily accessible at a glance. Coincidence? Nope, this was a result of deliberate thinking. The switches and controls all have an expensive click or heft to it when operated.

Everywhere you look and touch, the interior just oozes quality

The driving position is predictably, superb. All manner of adjustments is catered for. Mazda’s mastery of this department is evident, with the seats also providing a great range of support and bolstering. It makes occupants feel special.

The MZD Connect system is still one of the best infotainment systems of any car, despite the latest iteration losing touchscreen capabilities. Music afficionados will also appreciate the rich, warm sound of the 8-speaker audio system. Adrian, our colleague, is a bit of an audiophile and he was genuinely surprised a factory sound system could be that good.

Rear space is ok, but taller occupants will struggle

Interior space is what I’d describe as middling. It’s not the most spacious, but neither is it cramped. Four adults can sit comfortably in the cabin without compromise. Getting in and out of the CX-30 is also no hardship, with its wide door opening angle, and raised ride height. Where you would duck to enter a Mazda 3, in the CX-30 you can enter from a standing position.

Boot space is better than both the XV and C-HR, which isn’t saying much (430 litres). However, it is definitely enough cargo space to meet most buyers’ needs. Plumping for the High variants will score you added convenience in the form of a powered tailgate, but without hands-free operation.

One more thing I find really useful is the keyless entry with walk-away auto lock function. It means that you can just turn off your car, exit and walk away while the car locks automatically. I’m just surprised this feature hasn’t been adopted more widely by other manufacturers.

Anything not to like? Yes. Aesthetically, the black plastic trim that runs the entire length of the CX-30, is something I’d do without. It’s at odds with the rest of the otherwise expensive-looking exterior.

The black plastic trim really grates with the overall profile

The ride quality, whilst not the worst, can get uncomfortable over really poor surfaces. It’s no worse than the XV, but the C-HR strikes a better balance in terms of ride and handling. Overall, it is acceptable for something that rides on 18-inchers.

Visibility also suffers a little because of the high window-line. No doubt it looks great on the outside, but occupants on the inside might feel a little claustrophobic after an extended period. Passengers 170cm or taller might also struggle with the rear quarters, as the sunroof has robbed headroom, if only just a little.

Notice the consistent colour temperature across the dials

Of course, there’s the small issue of its price. While the range-topping XV GT Edition 2.0i-P retails for around RM133,788.00 (Subaru hasn’t released post-SST prices at the time of writing) and C-HR goes for RM 144,336 (SST exempted), the base CX-30 starts from RM 145,759, post-SST. This is a big ask for many buyers, who might not appreciate Mazda’s philosophy of doing cars.

All that being said, those who get it, get it. Mazda’s quirky and refreshing approach to building cars is to be commended. The automotive world is richer because of it, and the small percentage of driving enthusiasts still can buy an SUV that drives well. Should you desire a Mazda 3 but the missus says no, the CX-30 is the one.
