Though the all-new fourth-gen Nissan X-Trail has been unveiled in China back in April, the model is yet to be launched in right-hand drive (RHD) markets. The latest generation of the popular SUV first made its debut in North America as the Nissan Rogue.
For Japanese buyers, however, the wait is nearly over. According to a scoop by BestCarWeb, buyers wanting the all-new X-Trail would expect it to be announced in September with an official launch in December.
The Japanese automotive site mentioned that Nissan planned to unveil the T33 X-Trail at the now-cancelled 2021 Tokyo Motor Show. Had the motor show continue on as planned, the X-Trail could be making its RHD debut in the fall.
Not many details have been revealed but at least one powertrain will be offered on the Japanese-spec X-Trail and that is the 1.5-litre e-Power hybrid engine. This engine could be similar to the ones offered on the European-spec X-Trail that we reported previously.
The e-Power powertrain is currently offered on the all-new Nissan Qashqai in some markets which is the X-Trail’s smaller sibling. The smaller crossover is fitted with a 190 PS electric motor and a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine (156 PS).
Unlike other hybrid powertrains, the engine doesn't power the wheels but rather act as a generator to charge the high-voltage battery.
While the outgoing X-Trail is available in Japan with a petrol-powered variant (2.0-litre MR20DD), it is uncertain which petrol engines will be offered for its successor. There are two different petrol engines offered depending on the markets.
The Chinese X-Trail is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre 3-cylinder engine (204 PS/300 Nm) while the North American Rogue is powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine (183 PS/245 Nm).
With a more modern look and some comprehensive safety features, the all-new X-Trail is certainly a lot more grown-up than its predecessor. If it all goes according to plan, we might even see this SUV making its local debut in 2022.
