Overview

  • EyeSight ADAS is now standard
  • Android Auto, Apple CarPlay on both variants
  • Retuned suspension for more comfort, drive mode selector

The rugged Subaru XV keeps what we know and love of Subaru: a Boxer engine, and go-anywhere capabilities thanks to its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. And now, four years since this generation's initial debut here, its got a new look and improved safety as TC Subaru has launched the 2022 Subaru XV facelift in Malaysia.

As before, this competitor to the Honda HR-V and Toyota Corolla Cross is locally-assembled (CKD) at Tan Chong Motor Assemblies' Segambut plant.

Standard 2.0i-P variant

Two variants are offered, and their respective prices are as follows:

2022 Subaru XV price in Malaysia
Variant Price
2.0 i-P EyeSight RM 139,788
2.0 i-P GT Edition RM 146,788
OTR prices w/o insurance, SST-free valid until 30-June 2022

Exterior

Aside from the mechanical bits, the XV also gains a cleaner, slightly up-to-date look, thanks to a redesigned front-end, a lightly retouched rear, and new 17-inch wheels.

The GT Edition, note bodykit and wheels

And if one opts for the GT Edition, customers get a GT Edition body kit, 17-inch wheels, variant-specific leather seats, and 'Superview Around Recognition', Subaru's parlance for 360-degree cameras.

The XV comes in six colours: Crystal Black Silica, Magnetite Grey Metallic, Ice Silver Metallic, Dark Blue Pearl, Pure White, and Cool Grey Khaki.

Interior

Rounding up the changes under the skin is retuned suspension, with the XV now feautring coils and campers optimised for an even smoother ride.

Other than that, other new features with the XV are 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat with memory function, rear seat reminders, auto door-lock, and key-linked folding door mirrors.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also standard on the XV's 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with sound played through a 6-speaker setup.

Features

What’s new in the facelifted Subaru XV?

The biggest news is the addition of the EyeSight ADAS suite, which means it’s now level-pegging with the similarly-equipped Subaru Forester. The XV’s EyeSight suite includes:

  • Pre-collision braking
  • Adaptive cruise control with and stop & go (0-180 km/h)
  • Pre-collision throttle management
  • Lead vehicle start alert
  • Lane sway warning
  • Lane departure warning

And there’s new stuff under the hood as well. This updated XV bundles along Dual-Function X-Mode, which controls engine output, transmission, AWD torque split, and braking system to tackle tricky off-road conditions.

The ‘Dual’ part means the driver can select between two different settings tailored to specific driving conditions, namely dirt and mud.

Meanwhile, there’s also ‘Si Drive’, and no, this isn’t an allusion to the new Honda Civic. ‘S’ stands for ‘Sport’ while ‘I’ is for ‘Intelligent’, with the former sharpening up throttle response and the latter, an ‘eco mode’ of sorts.

Powertrain

Engine and transmission

The XV's powertrain combo is largely unchanged, and under the hood is a familiar petrol, direct injection, horizontally-opposed ('Boxer') engine.

Its FB20 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated (NA) mill pumps out 156 PS at 6,000 rpm and 196 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, and these outputs are routed to all four wheels via a Lineartronic CVT automatic with seven virtual ratios.

The equipment list of the XV includes adaptive LED headlights, LED taillights, keyless entry and push-button start, dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, and paddle shifters.

Driving Performance

Engine Performance
Smooth and linear in its power delivery that is aided by the CVT. It doesn’t accelerate as eagerly as a Honda HR-V, partly due to the AWD system and heavier weight.

Transmission Performance
Response is relatively quick, and it mimics the shifting of a conventional automatic transmission. Rubber band effect is also minimal during sudden acceleration.

Steering and handling
Steering is direct and sharp thanks to a quicker ratio from the previous generation. Body roll is well contained despite its ride height and it goes around corners with a surefooted assurance.

Ride Comfort

Sound proofing
General cabin noise level is relatively low. Mechanical noises such as the engine, transmission and suspension are well suppressed. Wind noise only gets noticeable at higher speeds, at which point the tyre noise becomes even more intrusive.

Passenger comfort
Ride quality is exemplary. It absorbs bumps with a sophistication most rivals lack, barring the Toyota CH-R. It lacks rear air vents but the seats have decent thigh support and is comfortable over long distance journeys.

Conclusion

With the continuous upward trend of SUVs, the Subaru XV has a winning formula of rugged looks, comfortable ride, smooth drivetrain, and all-wheel drive.
If you’re in a market for a crossover/SUV, this is worthy of your shortlist. (Honda HR-V vs Subaru XV vs Toyota C-HR vs Mazda CX-3: Which is best for you?)
