First introduced in Malaysia by the Weststar Group back in 2011, the Maxus V80 has undergone two facelifts. Over the years, the van has been refined and improved, proving itself to be the ultimate workhorse across multiple industries. With one the largest interior space offered in the segment, the Maxus V80 is highly customisable, catering for a wide array of service and business needs for both passenger and commercial use.
Usage of the Maxus V80 ranges from transportation of goods like the very familiar green Massimo Bread van, to the special purpose vehicle such as the ambulances used by the Malaysian Ministry of Health. Latest to join their fleet are the negative pressure ambulances used for the transport of Covid-19 patient during the pandemic.
Locally assembled in Johor, Malaysia, the Maxus V80 is offered in two basic configuration- the 2-seater panel van (short and long wheelbase) with price tag starting from RM 115,888 and the Window Van (12- and 15-seater) from RM 140,888. Clients with specific specifications and requirements may approach Maxus’s engineering team for a custom-built special purpose vehicle.
The exterior of the V80 is characterised by its high roof line and no-nonsense boxy design. The windshield up front is massive accompanied by a short down-slopping bonnet. The horizontal slated chromed plated grille is flanked by a pair of leaf-shaped headlight with integrated daytime running light.
The expansive side exterior panels are a great platform to brand a business or to advertise their products. Double-side sliding doors is available as an option and the standard 16-inch wheels are finished in steel. Side windows are replaced by pressed body panels on the panel van.
Passenger window van can be fitted with an optional electric step board for an easy access in and out of the vehicle. Narrow pillars on the windowed passenger van greatly enhances all-round visibility.
The rear beam doors design swings open to a 255-degree angle, allowing easy access even in narrow spaces. As standard, all variants come with the sole Blanc White exterior paint option with black bumpers for the panel van and body coloured bumper for the window van.
The Maxus V80 is easily the largest commercial vehicle on offered in Malaysia today, positioned right on top in Maxus’s local vehicle line up in terms of dimension after the T60 pickup and the G10 MPV. It’s a whopping 1,005 mm longer (LWB), 303 mm wider and up to 267 mm taller than the next closest competition, the Toyota Hiace.
The Maxus V80 has a large customizable interior to cater for both passenger and commercial use. The 2-seater panel van has a wide space for heavy lifting and storing loads of all specifications. The optional dual-sliding door allows easy access for loading of goods and the impressive 1.9 m internal height means that it is possible to stand upright in the cabin.
The new 2021 V80 now comes with a more premium fabric seats and a more convenient 2+1 seating configuration. This allows easy access to every seating row for all 12 to 15 passengers for a more comfortable in-cabin experience. The 1.7 m internal height offers ample head room to maneuver in the cabin.
It is business as usual up front with a central instrument cluster design on the dashboard. Combined with the high seating front seats, the forward visibility is greatly enhanced. The dashboard mounted gear lever and the lack of a transmission tunnel in the middle frees up space and allows for a flat floor design, offering direct access to the rear from the front seats.
The V80 is equipped with the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) featuring strong energy absorbing body frame, and a MIRA tuned suspension offering a more comfort-oriented ride. Two airbags are available for the front occupants only and safety featyres like the ABS with EBD, Brake Assist System (BAS) and 4 reverse parking sensors are available as standard.
Hauling the 2-ton van is an Italian designed VM Motori Eco-D 2.5 L turbo diesel engine, developing 136 PS at 3,800 RPM and 330 Nm of torque from 1,800 RPM. Maximum speed is 160 km/h.
The power unit comes with high tech features like the Bosch electronically controlled common rail direct injection system, variable geometry turbocharging (VGT) with inter-cooler, polymer skirted piston and aluminimum cylinder head.
At full capacity, the engine’s low-end torque is powerful enough to get the car off the line at a decent rate with a reasonable engine response.
It is fitted with an independent MacPherson strut up front and a non-independent taper leaf spring with gas filled absorber at the rear.
The suspension system is strong enough to handle a payload of 1.4 tons (1.2 ton for panel van) with a total gross weight of 3,500 kg yet the ride is comfortable enough to handle most road imperfection and long-distance drive, all thanks to the MIRA tuned suspensions.
